Open-air ecosystem platforms (also referred to as ‘in natura’): permanent or semi-permanent facilities dedicated to the manipulation and measurement of the main processes in terrestrial and freshwater aquatic ecosystems. They also provide laboratories for basic sample analysis and storage.
Among the 154 submitted experimental platforms, 124 fulfilled the required criteria with no or only slight technical upgrades. The open-air experimental platforms spread across the 4 main European climatic zones (Mediterranean, humid continental, humid oceanic and subarctic), include 7 ecosystem types (agricultural lands, forests, grasslands, shrublands, wetlands, rivers and lakes) with half of the platforms in agroecosystems. Overall these platforms offer the manipulation of 16 environmental pressures (climate components, CO2, management practices…).
